17,373 Gulf students to appear for CBSE exams Posted: Friday, February 15, 2008, 05:26 am EST New Delhi: Over 17,370 students from several Gulf countries will appear for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) class 12 and Class 10 board examinations this year.
This year 10,384 Gulf students from 103 schools will sit for the class 10 board examination beginning March 1. Last year 9,869 students had appeared for the examinations.
There are 6,995 candidates from 59 schools who will appear for the Class 12 board examinations beginning March 1 as well. Last year there were 6,203 candidates from 55 schools in Gulf countries.
These students are from several Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain.
Of the 10,384 students in class 10, 5,219 are male students and 5,165 are female candidates. Similarly in the class 12, there are 3,384 boys as against 3,611 girls.
"Every year the number of students from Gulf countries are increasing and they are very important for us. This year 17,373 students are taking the examinations in both secondary level and senior secondary level," Ashok Ganguly, chairman of CBSE, told reporters.
He said all arrangements have been put in place for the smooth conduct of the examinations. "We have already despatched admit cards to schools."
Ganguly said for class 10, CBSE has set up 36 centres and for class 10 and 31 centres for class 12 students.
In 2008, a total of 765,095 candidates will appear for the class 10 examination both in India and aboard. Similarly, 548,815 students would take the class 12 examinations both in India and other countries.
A number of helplines are also working in Gulf countries to help students get examination related information.
Ganguly said the board has redesigned the question paper of all the major subjects like Mathematics, Science, English, and Social Sciences.
"It will help gauge students' ability to reason, justify, analyse, process and evaluate information and knowledge.
"The format of question paper will have both very short answer type and long answer type questions," he said.
